Font 2010

Font was commissioned as part of the exhibition 'Reimagining the Treasures of Hyde Abbey' which celebrated the 900th anniversary of the founding of Hyde Abbey in Winchester.  Originally sited in Winchester Cathedral, opposite the Tournai Font, the work plays on ideas about names and typescripts.  With the names of the benefactors from the Abbey found in the ancient 'Book of Hyde' enamelled into layers of glass alongside the signatures of some of the contemporary residents of this area of Winchester.  As you approach the Font, a soundscape incorporated the chanted names of the ancient inhabitants interspersed with residents young and old singing their names is triggered … as the bowls sings to you!  Click here to hear the soundscape.
